E-Waste Drive

Hi everyone,
As the spring semester starts, Flagler College SIFE has a lot going on.  On January 18,  we will be holding a technology drive on the Flagler College west lawn from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  We will be collecting any unwanted pieces of technology ranging from TVs to computers.  If it once had a battery, we want it!  All pieces of technology collected will be recycled, helping to reduce the growing E-waste problem.  Nothing is off limits, we will accept it all.  It is a great way to get rid of all your unwanted junk.  If you can’t make it out on the 18th, we will be holding a drive in the St. Augustine Record parking lot from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on January 25th

BAB Meeting

It’s been another great week for Flagler SIFE.  We have been busy with project meetings and events.  We had another successful season of Conservation Cadets, and it ended on a great note with the Grand Finale Party.  We want to thank everyone who participated; it truly was a lot of fun!  We were happy to have the stars of the show in attendance and to celebrate together.  We are excited to announce that we will be holding our first business advisory board meeting of the year. It will be held on Tuesday, October 25th in Markland House.  This is a great time for us to update our BAB members on new and old projects, and to gain helpful feedback.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for new and old SIFEr’s to meet with the people who help make our projects so successful.  If you would like to attend, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

New year

Hi Everyone,

We hope you all had a wonderful summer!  Many of our SIFERS were busy with summer internships, and it sounds like everyone did a great job with many people obtaining offers to return next summer.  We are getting back into the swing of things as well.  The container was completed, and it has been officially moved to Ray’s home in Hastings, FL.  We have many prior projects kicking off, and some new exciting ones as well.  Any new students should feel free to come to a meeting and see what we are all about.  We meet every Wednesday at 6:00 PM in Markland house.  We would love to hear from you if you have any questions!

Thanks,

Flagler SIFE

Opportunity everywhere.

Hello,

This is Emily, FC SIFE President. Donna Delorenzo and I went to the Home Again St. Johns committee meeting this morning at the St. Augustine Record. Home Again is a collaboration of many different organizations and non-profits in the community that work with and for the homeless and less fortunate in St. Johns County. Instead of working against each other, these groups are facilitating communication and teamwork and bringing their individual resources together to battle homelessness, hunger, poverty and joblessness. So far the groups have created a community calendar so that all the groups can coordinate feeding sites and times so no one is left out. Second Harvest North Florida food bank has increased their distribution of food by 30,000 lbs. A publication with all of the contact info for all the local services has been created, and they are about to have there second printing of the publication because it was such a success.

I would like to congratulate everyone involved for their great humanitarian efforts, especially in this holiday season.

Project Updates

Containers for a Cause single container to be built early in semester.

Suruwat

Our Suruwat project began 2 years ago to help Nepalese refugees that were relocated to Jacksonville, FL assimilate into their new environment. When the refugees arrive in America they speak little English and do not always understand our cultural norms and ways of life.  Flagler SIFE began giving workshops to help these individuals learn everything from how to clean a kitchen to how to speak English.

We learned that 75,000 additional Nepalese refugees would be coming into the United States over the next 5 years. We wanted to create a program that could help these families face the challenges of everyday life in America: going to the bank, shopping at the supermarket, searching for a job. We produced a video and supplemental packet to help with these lessons. Our video and supplemental packet was distributed through the 10 national resettlement agencies including World Relief, Catholic Charities and Lutheran Social Services. Since the program was so well received we have been asked to create more videos.

Recently we met with Catholic Charities to determine the languages our video should be translated into, these include: Arabic, Spanish, and Barundi. Our next videos will use different nationalities as actors and will be translated into at least 7 different languages.

Conservation Cadets

Conservation Cadets was started last year when it was brought to Flagler SIFE’s attention that we could help people to conserve energy and save money. We deliver our message through a series of videos in which children and adults reverse roles. In our videos the Conservation Cadets, teach adults how to cut costs and conserve energy. A lot of great tips coupled with humor have allowed our Conservation Cadets to successfully reach about hundreds of people with their crash course in environmental sustainability.

We are pleased to announce that as we begin the fall semester, the Conservation Cadets project is, once again, gaining momentum as we look to the future.

Containers for a Cause

Containers for a Cause is one of our newer projects, started last semester, it is one of our largest and fastest growing. Containers for a Cause takes used shipping containers and transforms them into low income housing.
We are currently working on building our first container. The plans are still in the building department. When they are approved, we will begin the construction of our first container on The Record’s parking lot.
